HOK Talent Solutions Redundancy

Rebounding from Redundancy

Whilst the HSE profession was not as impacted by redundancies as other professions in FY23/24, we certainly helped some of our HSE network navigate through redundancy processes. Naturally, there were different feelings—some were positive, whilst others felt incredibly anxious.

We thought we’d share our top 10 tips to help you—or anyone in your network—who might be affected by their company downsizing;

1. You’re not alone

SEEK indicates that 1 in 4 Australians will experience a redundancy in their working career.

2. You haven’t been made redundant

It was your role (so, use that language – e.g. ‘my role was made redundant’).

3. Embrace some time off

Remember, you will work again, and this might be the only decent break you’ll ever have between jobs.

4. Be your own project

Focus on home, health and admin tasks that you didn’t have time to do while you were working.

5. Engage a professional*

To help you with your CV (note: most companies will offer outplacement / career coaching support – ensure you ask for this).
*Ps – we are happy to help or guide you with your CV development.

6. Freshen up your LinkedIn profile

Tell the world that you are now ‘open to work’ and start connecting with some movers and shakers.

7. Reach out to your network

Meet up with previous employers, colleagues and your trusted HSE recruiters.  Aim to have one meeting scheduled each day.

8. Open your mind to interim roles or volunteering (if finances allow)

Different experiences and work environments can enhance your CV.

9. Prioritise your well-being

Do things that make you happy.

10. Listen to your gut

If the first job that comes along doesn’t feel right – don’t take it unless you really have to – there will be others.
